Johan Cruijff ArenA
Johan Cruijff ArenA is the national stadium of the Netherlands and one of Europe’s most recognisable multi-use venues. Opened in 1996, the ArenA hosts elite football, international fixtures, concerts, and major events throughout the year.
The environment
Managing a playing surface within a modern, multi-use stadium brings a distinct set of agronomic considerations. The ArenA’s calendar blends domestic and international football with non-sporting events, requiring thoughtful surface management, forward planning, and close coordination between venue teams.
Our involvement
In 2024, Stadium Grass Group began a period of collaborative support around venue activity at the Johan Cruijff ArenA through a collaborative working approach alongside the Grounds team and key stakeholders. The focus has been on providing specialist turf guidance that complements existing expertise and day-to-day operations.
Support provided
Support has included the development of tailored maintenance and nutrition programmes aligned with usage patterns, pitch construction, and performance objectives.
This has been delivered through a combination of in-person site visits and ongoing remote consultation, allowing informed adjustments as conditions, schedules, and priorities evolve.
Additional planning has been provided for on-pitch events such as concerts, with careful consideration given to surface protection, recovery periods, and post-event restoration.
Outcomes
Through structured planning, consistent implementation, and open collaboration, overall pitch quality at the Johan Cruijff ArenA has improved significantly. The surface now delivers a reliable standard across a wide range of events and has received global recognition for its quality, presentation, and playability.
Our collaboration highlights how considered turf planning and collaborative support can help venues maintain high-performing playing surfaces within complex, multi-use settings.
